Alice Stokes Paul is an American Quaker, libertarian and feminist, and one of the main leaders and strategists of the campaign for the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, banning gender discrimination in the right to vote. Paul initiated, and with Lucy Burns and others, strategizing for events such as The Procession of the Woman and the Mute Man, as part of the successful campaign that led to the adoption of the revised 1920 version. After 1920 Paul spent half a century as a chef. of the National Women's Party, which advocates for the equal rights amendment, drafted by Paul and Crystal Eastman, to ensure equal constitutional rights for women. She had great success in bringing women into a group protected against discrimination by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with lawyer Pauli Murray. She also went to jail for protesting outside the White House.
