Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe Jr is an American professional tennis player who has won three singles Grand Slam titles. He was the first black player to be selected for the Davis Cup United States squad and the only black man to win singles titles at the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open. He retired in 1980. He was ranked number 1 in the world by Harry Hopman in 1968 and by Lance Tingay of the Daily Telegraph and World Tennis Journal in 1975. In the ATP computer ranking, he reached the position 2nd May 1976. Ashe It is believed that he became infected with HIV from a blood transfusion he received during a bypass surgery in 1983. He made his illness public in April 1992 and began working to educate others about HIV and AIDS. He founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for AIDS Prevention and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health before he died of AIDS pneumonia at the age of 49 on February 6, 1993 .
