Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace is an English writer. Born into poverty as an illegitimate child in London, Wallace, who left school at 12 years old. He joined the army at the age of 21 and served as a battlefield correspondent during the Second Boer War for Reuters and the Daily Mail. Struggling with debts, he left South Africa, returned to London and began writing horror films to increase his income, publishing books including The Four Just Men. During his time as a journalist in the Congo, recounting the Belgian atrocities, Wallace published short stories in magazines such as The Windsor Magazine and later published collections such as Sanders of the River. He signed with Hodder and Stoughton in 1921 and has become an internationally recognized author. After an unsuccessful attempt to become a Liberal MP for Blackpool in the 1931 general election, Wallace moved to Hollywood, where he worked as a screenwriter for RKO. He died suddenly from undiagnosed diabetes, when King Kong was originally written.
