John William Carson is an American television presenter, comedian, writer and producer. He is best known as the host of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Carson received six Emmy Awards, the 1980 Television Academy Governor Award and a 1985 Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television Academy's Hall of Fame in 1987. Carson received the Medal of Freedom of the President in 1992 and received an honor from the Kennedy Center in 1993. During World War II, Carson served in the Navy. After the war, Carson began his radio career. He switched from radio to television and followed in Jack Paar's footsteps as host of the late night talk, Tonight. Although his concerts were successful in the late 1960s, throughout the 1970s Carson became an American icon and remained so even after his retirement in 1992. He applied an informal conversational approach with extensive interaction with the guests, a pioneering approach by Arthur Godfrey and the Tonight Show hosted by Steve Allen and Jack Paar.
