Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen is a Norwegian polar explorer. He was a key figure in the era known as the Heroic Antarctic Era. Born in Borge, Østfold, Norway, Amundsen began her career as a polar explorer as the first companion of Adrien de Gerlache's Belgian Antarctic expedition in 1897. –1899. From 1903 to 1906, he led the first expedition to successfully travel the Northwest on the slippery Gjøa. In 1909, Amundsen began planning an Antarctic expedition. He left Norway in June 1910 aboard the Fram and arrived in Antarctica in January 1911. His team set up a camp at Whale Bay and a series of supplies on the barrier before heading for the South Pole. October. The group of five, led by Amundsen, became the first to successfully reach Antarctica on December 14, 1911.
