Rudolf Virchow
Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow is a German physician, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor and politician. He is known as the “father of modern pathology” and the founder of social medicine, and is known by his colleagues as the “pope of medicine”. Virchow studied medicine at Friedrich Wilhelm University under Johannes Peter Müller. He worked at the Charité hospital under the direction of Robert Froriep, to whom he succeeded as director of prose. His investigation of the typhus epidemic of 1847–48 in Upper Silesia laid the foundations for public health in Germany and paved the way for his political and social career. From there he came up with a famous aphorism: "Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing but medicine on a large scale." He participated in the Revolution in 1848, which led to his expulsion from Charity the following year. Then he published a newspaper Die Medizinische Reform. He assumed the post of first president of anatomical pathology at the University of Würzburg in 1849.
