William Jennings Bryan
William Jennings Bryan is an American speaker and politician from Illinois and Nebraska. Beginning in 1896, he emerged as a dominant force in the Democratic Party, running as the party's candidate for President of the United States three times in the elections of 1896, 1900, and 1908. He also served in the House of Representatives of the United States. United States and as United States Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. Because he believed in the wisdom of ordinary people, he was often referred to as the “general”. Born and raised in Illinois, Bryan moved to Nebraska in the 1880s. He won the House of Representatives elections in the election of 1890, serving two terms before running for the Senate in 1894. During at the 1896 National Democratic Conference, Bryan delivered a "Golden Speech Cross" denouncing the gold standard and Eastern monetary interests and being pressed for inflation policies built around expanding coins silver.
