James B. Steele is an American journalist and investigative author. With a long-time collaborator, Donald L. At Barlett, you have won two Pulitzer prizes, two National Magazine Awards and five George Polk Awards during their thirty-five years of service with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Time and Vanity Fair. This duo is commonly known as Barlett and Steele. Steele was born in Hutchinson, Kansas and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Missouri - Kansas City and started his career at the Kansas City Times, where he covered politics, work and urban issues. In 1970 he joined The Philadelphia Inquirer, where he began collaborating with Barlett. During a 1972 collaboration for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Steele and Barlett were the first to use computers to analyze violent crime data. Their story, “IRS Audit,” won them the Special Gerald Loeb Award in 1975. Twenty years later, they co-wrote the America: What Went Wrong series?

Over the course of his 35-year career, he worked for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Time Magazine, among other publications. He was a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner as well as a two-time National Magazine Award winner.
