Prior to O'Connor's tenure on the court, she was a judge and elected in Arizona, and was the first woman to lead the state Senate majority as the Republican leader in the Arizona Senate. After being appointed to the Court, O'Connor was unanimously confirmed by the Senate. On July 1, 2005, she announced her intention to retire upon confirmation of her successor. Samuel Alito was appointed as its President in October 2005 and joined the Court on January 31, 2006. She often sided with conservative bloc of the Court. She often writes consenting opinions that limit majority ownership.
