Thijs van Leer ist ein niederländischer Musiker, Sänger, Songwriter, Komponist und Produzent, der vor allem als Gründungsmitglied der Rockgruppe Focus als Leadsänger, Keyboarder und Flötist bekannt ist. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Amsterdam als Sohn einer Musikerfamilie, studierte van Leer als Kind Klavier und Flöte und verfolgte sie an Universitäten und Musikhochschulen. Von 1967 bis 1969 trat van Leer in einer Theater-Varieté-Show unter der Regie von Ramses Shaffy als Sänger und Nebenmusiker auf, nahm Singles als Solokünstler auf und produzierte, arrangierte und leitete Musik für Bojoura. Er gründete Trio Thijs van Leer, eine dreiköpfige Rockband, die sich Ende 1969 zu Focus entwickelte, nachdem er den Gitarristen Jan Akkerman hinzugefügt hatte. Nach der Veröffentlichung von Move Waves und ihrer Lead-Single "Hocus Pocus", die die Schreie und Pfeifen von van Leer enthielt, erzielte Focus internationale Erfolge. Nach einer Reihe von Alben mit unterschiedlichen Produktlinien löste van Leer den Focus 1978 auf; 2002 hat er die Gruppe umgestaltet.
