George VI was King of Great Britain and Rulers of the British Commonwealth from December 11, 1936 until his death in 1952. He was also the last Emperor of India until August of the year. 1947, when the British Raj was dissolved. Known as “Bertie” to his family and close friends, George VI was born during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria and named after his great-grandfather Albert, the Prince Consort. As King George V's second son, he is not expected to inherit the throne and spend his first life in the shadow of his brother, Edward. He attended naval college as a teenager and served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during World War I. In 1920, he was appointed Duke of York. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. In the mid-1920s, he was treated for stuttering to treat stuttering, which he learned to deal with to some degree.

From 1936 to 1952, he was the monarch of England. He was the final emperor of British-controlled India during the 1930s and 1940s. Elizabeth II, his eldest daughter, was crowned Queen of England.
