He is an Olympic gold medalist in the K-1,500m category and won two world championships in the K-1,500 and K-1 1,000 events, winning four Olympic medals and eight world championships. The club in his hometown is the Canoe Burloak Club in Oakville, Ontario. In the 2019 Canadian Federal Election, Van Koeverden was elected to the House of Commons of Canada, representing the constituency of Milton as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada caucus.
