In 1928, Earhart became the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by plane, becoming a celebrity. In 1932, flying the Lockheed Vega 5B, Earhart completed a nonstop alone transatlantic flight, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat. She received the Flying Cross Award awarded by the United States for this achievement. In 1935 Earhart became a visiting lecturer at Purdue University as an aeronautical engineering consultant and career advisor to female students.
