She set several other records, wrote bestsellers about her flying experiences, and helped found The Ninety-Nines, an organization for women pilots. Born in Atchison, Kansas, Earhart developed a passion for adventure from a young age, constantly gaining flying experience in his twenties. In 1928, Earhart became the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by plane, becoming a celebrity. In 1932, flying the Lockheed Vega 5B, Earhart completed a nonstop alone transatlantic flight, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat. She received the Flying Cross Award awarded by the United States for this achievement. In 1935 Earhart became a visiting lecturer at Purdue University as an aeronautical engineering consultant and career advisor to female students.
