Ariel Sharon is an Israeli general and politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Israel from March 2001 to April 2006. Sharon has been the Commander of the IDF since its founding in 1948. Is a soldier and then an officer, he participated prominently in the Palestinian War in 1948, became a platoon commander in the Alexandroni Brigade and participated in numerous battles, including Operation Bin Nun Alef. He was credited with establishing Unit 101 and retaliation operations, as well as the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Six-Day War of 1967, the War of Contest and the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Yitzhak Rabin called Sharon "our greatest battlefield commander in history". After retiring from the military, Sharon joined politics, joined Likud and held a number of ministerial positions in Likud-led governments in 1977–92 and 1996–99. As Minister of Defense, he led the Lebanon War in 1982
