Arthur Eddington
Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington is an English astronomer, physicist and mathematician. He is also a scientist and disseminator of science. The Eddington limit, the natural limit to the brightness of stars, or the radiation produced by accretion to a compact body, is named in his honor. Around 1920, he predicted the discovery and mechanism of nuclear fusion processes in stars, in his article "The Internal Constitution of Stars". At that time, the source of stellar energy was a complete mystery; Eddington was the first to correctly speculate that the source is the fusion of hydrogen into helium. Eddington has written several articles which publish and explain Einstein's theory of general relativity for the English speaking world. World War I cut off many channels of scientific communication, and new developments in German science were not well known in Britain.
