His use of impressionistic harmonies, creative interpretations of the traditional jazz repertoire, chords of chords and “sung” melodic lines independent of the rhythmic mark continue to influence the jazz pianist of today. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1929, he received classical training at the University of Southeast Louisiana and the Mannes School of Music, New York, where he majored in composition and obtained an artist's diploma. In 1955 he moved to New York, where he worked with the group and theorist George Russell. In 1958, Evans joined the group of Miles Davis, who in 1959, then immersed himself in rhythmic jazz, recording Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time.
