Mary William Ethelbert Appleton Burke, better known as Billie Burke, is an American actress famous on Broadway and radio, as well as in silent movies and sounds. She is best known to modern audiences for her role as Glinda the Good Witch of the North in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's musical The Wizard of Oz. Burke was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Emily Kilbourne in Merrily We Live. She is also remembered for her appearance in the Topper series. His signature voice, tall, hesitant and aristocratic, made him a frequent choice for playing the role of dark and spoiled societies. She is married to Broadway producer and director Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. from 1914 until his death in 1932 .
