Robert L. Douglas is the founder of the New York Renaissance basketball team, the first all-black professional basketball team owned by blacks. Dubbed the "father of black professional basketball," Douglas owned and trained Rens from 1923-1949, bringing them to a record 2,318-381. He was inducted into the Basketball Fame Hall of Fame as a contributor in 1972, being the first African American to be honored. Rens stormed across the United States, mostly in the Midwest, and played depending on which team would program them, black or white. Traveling up to 200 miles for a game, they often slept on the bus and ate cold meals; they were banned from many hotels and restaurants by the Jim Crow Act and the racist rules that were common in the northern United States at the time. Rens quickly became a dominant team, winning 88 consecutive games during the 1932–33 season.
