Canaan Sodindo Banana was a Minister of the Methodist of Zimbabwe, theologian and politician who served as the first president of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987. He was the first head of state of Zimbabwe after the Lancaster House treaty. lead to independence from the country. In 1987, he resigned as president and was replaced by Prime Minister Robert Mugabe, who became the executive president of the country. In 1997, Banana was charged with homosexuality and, after a trial of first instance, was convicted of 11 counts of groping and "unnatural behavior", and sentenced to six months in prison. Banana was born in Essexvale, a village in Matabeleland, Southern Rhodesia, to a mother Ndebele and a father Mosotho. He trained at a mission school before studying at Epworth College of Theology in Salisbury. Ordained in 1962, he served as school principal and administrator pastor from 1963 to 1966. He was elected president of the Church Council of Bulawayo in 1969, holding this position until 1971
