Charles Elwood Yeager was a United States Air Force officer, aviation soldier and record test pilot who, in 1947, became the first pilot in history to surpass the speed of sound in level flight. Yeager's career began in World War II as Private in the United States Army, appointed to the Air Force in 1941. After serving as an aircraft mechanic, in September 1942, he enlisted in pilot training and when he graduated he was promoted on board. the officer, who later won most of the air feats as a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot on the Western Front, where he is credited with downing 11.5 enemy aircraft. On 12 October 1944, he received the title of "ace in a day", shooting down 5 enemy planes in a single mission. After the war, Yeager became a test pilot and piloted a variety of aircraft, including missile-powered test aircraft for the National Aerospace Advisory Committee.
