Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld is a Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the second UN secretary-general. As of 2021, he remains the youngest person to hold this position, only 47 years old when he was appointed in 1953. Hammarskjöld's term was characterized by efforts to consolidate both the newly formed United Nations and foreign. He launched initiatives aimed at raising the morale and efficiency of the organization while seeking to make the UN more responsive to global issues. He presided over the creation of the first United Nations peacekeeping forces in Egypt and the Congo, and intervened personally to dispel or resolve diplomatic crises. Hammarskjöld's second term was cut short when he died in a plane crash on his way to ceasefire negotiations during the Congo crisis.
