Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis is a retired English actor with dual British and Irish citizenship. His numerous awards include three Academy Awards for Best Actor, making him the only actor to have three wins in that category and one of only four actors to win three Oscars. He won four BAFTA Awards for Best Actor, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. In June 2014, Day-Lewis received a knighthood for services to drama. Born and raised in London, Day-Lewis excelled on stage at the National Youth Theatre before being accepted at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which he attended for three years. Despite his traditional training at the Bristol Old Vic, he is considered a method actor, known for his constant devotion to and research of his roles. Displaying a "mercurial intensity", he would often remain completely in character throughout the shooting schedules of his films, even to the point of adversely affecting his health.

Highly acclaimed actor who won Academy Awards for Best Actor for portraying Christy Brown in 1989's My Left Foot, Daniel Plainview in 2007's There Will Be Blood and Abraham Lincoln in 2012's Lincoln. He also received praise for his roles in Gangs of New York and The Last of the Mohicans.
Prior to his acting career, he applied for a five-year apprenticeship, hoping to become a cabinet-maker.
He is known for his complete immersion into the roles he's given; when he played Lincoln, he believed in his heart he was former US President Abraham Lincoln.
His sister, Tamasin Day-Lewis, is a documentary filmmaker and television chef. His father was Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis. He dated Isabelle Adjani from from 1989 to 1995 and married screenwriter Rebecca Miller in 1996. He has three sons named Gabriel, Ronan and Cashel.
