Daniel Webster is an American lawyer and politician who represents New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the US Congress and served as Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore. As one of America's leading lawyers in the 19th century, he argued more than 200 cases before the Supreme Court of the United States from 1814 until his death in 1852. Throughout his life, he was a member of the Federal Party, the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. Born in New Hampshire in 1782, Webster founded a successful law practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after completing his law degree. He emerged as a leading dissident during the War of 1812 and won an election to the US House of Representatives, where he was leader of the Federal Party. Webster left office after two terms and moved to Boston, Massachusetts.
