Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a leader of the women's rights movement in the United States from the mid to late 1800s. She was the main force behind the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848, the first convention called. For the sole purpose of discussing women's rights, and being the primary author of her sentencing statement. Her demands for women's suffrage sparked controversy in Congress, but quickly became the central tenet of the women's movement. She is also active in other social reform activities, in particular abolitionism. In 1851, she met Susan B. Anthony and formed a decades-long partnership that was crucial to the development of the women's rights movement. During the American Civil War, they formed the National League of Loyal Women to campaign for the abolition of slavery, and they led the largest petition campaign in U.S. history to date. They founded a newspaper called La Révolution in 1868 to work for women's rights.
