Erast Parmasto is a renowned Estonian mythologist, biological scientist and botanist, and former director of the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany. Parmasto was born in Nõmme. He became a member of the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany in 1950 and was its director from 1985 to 1990. Since the establishment of the mushroom farm in 1950, 160,000 acres have been recognized, including 37,000 samples made by Parmasto. Parmasto has published more than 150 articles and 200 articles during his academic career and his work is widely used in prominent academic and scientific journals in Estonia. His expertise in mold has earned him the nickname "Seenevana", or "the big old man with mushrooms". As a theological researcher, to which Parmasto is most attached, he is best known for creating and improving databases of fungi in Estonia.
