Eric Foner is an American historian. He has written extensively on American political history, liberal history, early Republican history, African American biography, reconstruction, and history, and is a faculty member in the Department of Great History. He has studied Colombia since 1982. He is the author of several high school textbooks. According to the Open Curriculum Project, Foner is the most frequently cited author of the university curriculum for history classes. Foner is the leading contemporary historian of the Reconstruction period, publishing Reconstruction: The Unfinished American Revolution, 1863–77 in 1989 and over 10 other books on the subject. His online courses on "Civil War and Reconstruction", published in 2014, are available at Columbia University on ColumbiaX. In 2011, Foner The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery won the Pulitzer Prize in History, the Lincoln Prize and the Bancroft Prize.
