Gia Long
Gia Long, whose birth name was Nguyen Phuc Anh or Nguyen Anh, was the first emperor of the Nguyen dynasty of Vietnam. Unifying the country of Vietnam today in 1802, he founded the Nguyen dynasty, the last of the Vietnamese dynasties. As Nguyen's nephew who last ruled southern Vietnam, Nguyen Anh was forced into hiding in 1777 at the age of 15 when his family was killed in the Tay Son uprising. After several changes of ownership, during which his loyalists regained and again lost Saigon, he befriended the French Catholic bishop Pierre Pigneau de Behaine. Pigneau supports his cause for the French government and seeks to recruit volunteers when this happens to help Nguyen Anh regain the throne. From 1789, Nguyen Anh again took the throne and began his march north to defeat Tay Son, on the border with China in 1802, which was previously under the control of the Trinh lords.
