The son of jeweler parents, he grew up in the Great Depression era and paid his way through the industrial engineering program at the University of Pittsburgh by working as a door-to-door salesman.

Family Life
His first marriage to Dorothy Hardy lasted five decades and produced five children. His second marriage to Debra Hardy lasted from 1947 until 1997 and resulted in two children. In his eighties, he was briefly married to a twenty-two-year-old employee named Kristin Georgi in 2007. His fourth wife was Rebecca Davis. In 2014, he married Jodi Santella Williams; they had a son together.
