Larry Joe Bird is a former American professional basketball player, coach and executive of the National Basketball Association. Nicknamed "the Hick of French Lick" and "Larry Legend", Bird is considered by many to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Growing up in French Lick, Indiana, he was a local basketball player. Highly selected, he first signed to play for Indiana Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight, but dropped out after a month and returned to French Lick to attend a local community college. The following year, he attended the smaller Indiana State University, eventually playing three years for Sycamores. Drafted by the Boston Celtics with a sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, after his sophomore year in Indiana, Bird chose to stay in college and play another season.

"Larry the Legend," a Boston Celtics forward who won three NBA MVP honors, three NBA Championships, and appeared in 12 All-Star games. He is largely regarded as one of the best NBA players of all time.
Before his college basketball career at Indiana State, where he was voted national player of the year in 1979, he was the all-time leading scorer at Springs Valley High School in Indiana.
He became the Indiana Pacers' president of basketball operations after retiring from the NBA.
After enrolling at Indiana State, he married his high school sweetheart Janet Condra, but they divorced before he became pro. In 1989, he married Dinah Mattingly, with whom he has three children: Corrie and Mariah, a daughter, and Connor, a son.
He won three NBA titles while playing for the Celtics alongside Robert Parish.
