Michael Cimino
Michael Cimino is an American director, screenwriter, producer and writer. He rose to fame as the director of The Deer Hunter, which won an Oscar for Best Picture and won him the Best Director Award. However, Cimino's reputation will be tarnished by his sequel Heavenly Gate, a catastrophic failure that turned into one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. Born in New York City, he received a BA in Graphic Arts from Michigan State University in 1959 and a BFA and MFA from Yale University in 1961 and 1963. Cimino began his career in commercial filming and moved to Los Angeles to undertake screenwriting work in 1971. After co-writing Silent Running and Magnum Force, he wrote the preliminary scripts for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Clint Eastwood read the script and sent it to his personal production company Malpaso Productions, which got Cimino to direct the film in 1974
