Milton S. Hershey

Milton Snavely Hershey is an American chocolate producer, businessman and philanthropist. Trained in the confectionery industry, Hershey pioneered the production of caramel from fresh milk. He founded the Lancaster Caramel Company, which obtained large quantities of exports, then sold it to form a new company offering mass-produced milk chocolate, once a luxury item. The first Hershey bars went on sale in 1900 and became so popular that he was able to build his own business town in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey's philanthropy extended to a boarding school, originally for local orphans, but could accommodate around 2,000 students in 2016. During World War II, the company developed an intractable bar specifically for troops serving in abroad. The Hershey Company, known as Hershey, is one of the largest confectioners in the world.
