Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was an American fighter pilot, who served as a warrior for the United States Marines during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor and the Naval Cross. A naval pilot who joined the Pacific Fleet in 1941, Boyington joined the ROC's "Flying Tigers" and fought in Burma in late 1941 and 1942 during the military conflict between China and Japan. In September 1942, Boyington joined the Marine Corps. In early 1943, he deployed to the South Pacific and began combat missions aboard the F4U Corsair fighter aircraft. In September 1943, he took command of the VMF-214 fighter squadron. In January 1944 Boyington, with more numbers than the Japanese "Zero" planes, was shot down in the Pacific Ocean after shooting down one of the enemy planes. He was captured by the crew of the Japanese submarine and held prisoner for over a year and a half.
