Patrick Joseph Lucey is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 38th Governor of Wisconsin from 1971 to 1977. He was also the independent presidential candidate John B. Anderson in the 1980 presidential election. Born in La. Crosse, Wisconsin, Lucey worked in local government offices after graduating from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the Admiral's Army Corps during World War II. He served as lieutenant of the state of Wisconsin from 1965 to 1967 and was unsuccessful in challenging Governor Warren P. Knowles in the 1966 election for governor. Lucey won the Wisconsin gubernatorial election year. 1970 and held the position of governor until 1977, when he accepted President Jimmy Carter's appointment as US Ambassador to Mexico. As governor, Lucey presided over the consolidation of the Wisconsin State University system and the University of Wisconsin system.
