Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was the Spanish admiral and explorer of Avilés, Asturias, Spain. It is notable for planning the first regular transoceanic convoys, known as the Spanish Treasure Fleet, and for the establishment of St. Petersburg. Augustine, Florida, in 1565. It was Spain's first successful colony in La Florida and was the most important city colony in the region for nearly three centuries. St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited colony established by Europeans on the American continent. Menéndez de Avilés was also the first governor of La Florida.
