Portia May White is a Canadian singer, known for being the first black Canadian singer to achieve international fame. Growing up in the choir of his father's church in Halifax, Nova Scotia, White competed in local singing competitions as a teenager and then trained at the Halifax Conservatory. In 1941 and 1944, she made her debut at home and abroad as a singer, receiving critical acclaim for her interpretations of European classical music and American-American spirit. White then toured throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America. When vocal difficulties and cancer contributed to his retirement in 1952, White moved to Toronto and later taught young Canadian musicians such as Lorne Greene, Dinah Christie, Don Francks, Robert Goulet and Anne. Marie Moss. One of White's last major public appearances was the special command performance for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1964 .
