Rufus Wilmot Griswold is an American poet, publisher, poet and critic. Born in Vermont, Griswold left home at the age of 15. He has worked as a journalist, editor and critic in Philadelphia, New York and elsewhere. He built a solid literary reputation, in part thanks to the American Collection of Poets and Poets of 1842. This collection, which was the most comprehensive at the time, included what it was arguably the best example of poetry. American. He created modified versions and similar anthologies for the rest of his life, although many of the poets he promoted slowly faded into obscurity.
