Sir Francis Galton, FRS, is a Victorian Englishman: statistician, sociologist, psychologist, anthropologist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, gas meteorologist, genetic predecessor, psychologist and supporter of Social Darwinism, Eugenics and Scientific Racism. He was knighted in 1909. Galton produced over 340 journals and books. He also created the statistical concept of correlation and widely promoted regression to the mean. He was the first to apply statistical methods to study human differences and the legacy of intelligence, and introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys to collect data on human communities, which he needed to his genealogical and biographical work as well as for his anthropological studies. He was a pioneer in eugenics, coined the term himself in 1883, and coined the term “nature versus nourishment”. His book Genius is the first social science effort to study genius and greatness.
