Taboo is an implicit ban on something based on a cultural sense that it is too disgusting or perhaps too sacred for ordinary people. Such prohibitions are present in almost all societies. On a comparative basis, taboos, for example relating to food products, do not seem to make sense, since what may be declared inappropriate for one group or customary religion may be completely accepted with regard to another group. Taboos are often aimed at protecting individuals, but there are many other reasons for their existence. The ecological or medical history is evident in many people, including some foundations of religious or spiritual origin. Taboos can make resource use more efficient, but when applied to a single community subdivision, they can also be used to block that community subdivision.
