Thijs Van Leer
Thijs van Leer is a Dutch musician, singer, songwriter, composer and producer best known as a founding member of the rock group Focus as lead singer, keyboardist and flautist. Born and raised in Amsterdam to a family of musicians, van Leer studied piano and flute as a child and pursued them in universities and music academies. From 1967 to 1969, van Leer performed in a theatrical variety show directed by Ramses Shaffy as a singer and supporting musician, recording singles as a solo artist and producing, arranging and directing music for Bojoura. He founded Trio Thijs van Leer, a three-piece rock band that evolved into Focus at the end of 1969 after adding guitarist Jan Akkerman. Focus achieved international success following the release of Move Waves and their lead single, "Hocus Pocus," which featured the screams and whistles of van Leer. After a number of albums with different product lines, van Leer disbanded the Focus in 1978; he revamped the group in 2002 .
