HIV, Mon Amour, Black Milk, and What Silence Equals are among the poet's HIV and AIDS-themed pieces. She was the recipient of a number of PEN American grants for AIDS-affected writers.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she attended Barnard College.
She was diagnosed with HIV at the age of thirty and died of an AIDS-related infection in her late forties.
In the late 1990s, she married author Sean Harvey.
