William Mulholland
William Mulholland is a self-taught Irish-American civil engineer who is responsible for building infrastructure to supply water, making Los Angeles the largest city in California. As the head of the Los Angeles Department of Electricity and Water, Mulholland designed and overseen the construction of the Los Angeles Viaduct, a 233-mile system to transport water from Owens Valley to San Fernando Valley. The creation and operation of the plumbing resulted in a dispute known as the Underwater War in California. In March 1928, Mulholland's career ended when the Dam St. Francis broke down just over 12 hours after he and his assistant checked the safety.
