John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie is an American jazz musician, band, songwriter, educator and singer. He is a skillful trumpeter and improvisation artist, based on Roy Eldridge's virtuous style but adding layers of harmony and rhythm to date unmatched in jazz music. His combination of musical senses, direction and humor makes him one of the main popularists for the new genre of music called bebop. The horn-rimmed beret and glasses, the fine vocals, the curved horns, the pocket-shaped cheeks and the gentle personality provided some of the most important symbols of the bebop hat. In the 1940s, Gillespie, along with Charlie Parker, became a pivotal figure in the development of modern bebop and jazz.
