John Adams was an American politician, lawyer, diplomat, writer and Founder Father, who served as the second President of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Prior to his presidency, he was an leader of the American Revolution, who gained independence from Great Britain, and he was the first vice president of the United States. Adams was a dedicated restaurant expert and corresponded regularly with many important figures in early American history, including his wife and advisers Abigail Adams and Thomas Jefferson. As a pre-revolutionary lawyer and political activist, Adams was devoted to the right to counsel and found himself innocent. He challenged his anti-British sentiment and successfully defended British soldiers against murder allegations stemming from the Boston Massacre. Adams was a Massachusetts member of the Continental Congress and became a leader of the revolution. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Perhaps most famous for his September 11-themed, Pulitzer Prize-winning choral piece On the Transmigration of Souls (2002), Adams is also known for a number of other minimalist musical compositions, including the orchestral piece Short Ride in a Fast Machine and the string septet work Shaker Loops.
