Dr. Fell's Mystery The Hollow man, considered Carr's masterpiece, was chosen in 1981 as the best locked mystery of all time by a panel of 17 enigmatic writers and critics. He also wrote some historical mysteries. Having resided in the UK for several years, Carr is often classified as an "à la British" mystery writer. Most of his novels have an English setting, especially villages and country estate, and English characters.

He is most known for works like as The Hollow Man and The Burning Court, which he wrote in the United States. His first work is regarded as his greatest.
