For English speaking audiences he is known to play tragic heroic characters, such as Shogun Tadamichi Kuribayashi in Letters from Iwo Jima and Lord Katsumoto Moritsugu in The Last Samurai, he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Among other awards, he won the Japan Academy Film Award for Best Actor twice, in 2007 for Memories of Tomorrow and in 2010 for Shizumanu Taiyō. He is also known for his roles in the films Batman Begins and Christopher Nolan's Inception, Memoirs of a Geisha and Pokémon Detective Pikachu. In 2014, he starred in the Godzilla reboot as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, a role he reappeared in the sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He voiced the fourth and fifth installments of the Transformers series, Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight, respectively, when Decepticon transformed Autobot Drift.

He is best recognized in the United States for his appearances in Inception and Batman Begins. His roles in Letters from Iwo Jima and The Last Samurai earned him critical acclaim. He also appeared in the 2014 film Godzilla, in which he had a pivotal part. He made his Broadway debut in The King and I in 2015 as the King of Siam.
