Louis Braille ist ein französischer Pädagoge und Erfinder des Lese- und Schriftsystems für Blinde und Sehbehinderte. Sein System ist bis heute praktisch unverändert geblieben und ist weltweit unter dem einfachen Namen Braille bekannt. Er war seit seinem dritten Lebensjahr auf einem Auge blind bei einem Unfall mit einer genähten Werkstatt im Geschirrladen seines Vaters. Diese Infektion breitet sich auf beide Augen aus und führt zu völliger Blindheit. Zu dieser Zeit gab es nicht viele Ressourcen für Blinde, aber nie sehr wenige. Er war in der Schule hervorragend und erhielt Stipendien von der Royal Academy for Blind Teenagers in Frankreich. Schon als Student begann er mit der Entwicklung eines taktilen Codierungssystems, mit dem Blinde schnell und effizient lesen und schreiben können. Inspiriert von Charles Barbiers militärischer Chiffre hat Braille eine neue Methode entwickelt, die speziell auf die Bedürfnisse von Blinden zugeschnitten ist. 1824 präsentierte er seine Arbeiten erstmals seinen Kollegen.
