Papst Pius XI., geborene Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, war vom 6. Februar 1922 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1939 Oberhaupt der katholischen Kirche. Er war der erste Herrscher der Vatikanstadt seit ihrer Gründung als unabhängiger Staat am 11. Juni 1923, wurde anlässlich des sechshundertjährigen Jubiläums der Heiligsprechung des Thomas von Aquin verfasst, dessen Denken als zentrales Element der katholischen Philosophie und Theologie gilt.
