Ernests Blanks, a publicist, first openly demanded Latvian independence in 1917. Ernests Blanks is editor of Dzimtenes Atbalss. At a time when others were discussing the autonomy of Latvia and other Baltic states, Ernests Blanks dared to claim Latvian sovereignty. Already on July 21 [O.S. July 8] 1917 Ernests Blanks wrote emphatically: "Our ideal is a sovereign Latvian." After the creation of the Latvian state, he recalled that the Latvians had regained their long-lost freedoms. For a time he was a member of the first parliament of Tautas Padome, Saeima's predecessor. He wrote about Saeima, but mainly about the Latvian National Awakening Organization and its activists. He is one of them, although he is discreet about his role. Author of around 700 editorials on Latvian national political issues and at least 15 books, some of which appeared in the 2nd and 3rd editions.
