Robert Larimore Riggs is an American tennis champion, world No. 1 or world No. 1 co. 1 player for 3 years, first amateur in 1939, then professional in 1946 and 1947. He played his first professional tennis match on December 26, 1941. As a single player 21 year old amateur racquet in 1939, Riggs won the Wimbledon, at the American National Championship, and reached the final at the French Championship. He was again the champion of the United States in 1941, following second place the year before. Riggs was the only one to win the men's singles, men's and women's doubles championship, at Wimbledon in 1939. After retiring as a professional, Riggs was widely known as a cheater and tennis player. He has organized numerous exhibition challenges, inviting dynamic and retired tennis professionals to participate. In September 1973, at the age of 55, he staged one of these events against then-female champion Billie Jean King, whom he had lost.
