Brendan Francis Aidan Behan is an Irish poet, short story writer, novelist and playwright, who writes in English and Irish. He was named one of the greatest Irish writers of all time by the Irish Center. Irish Republican and volunteer in the Irish Republican Army, Behan was born in Dublin to a loyal Republican family, becoming a member of the IRA's Fianna Éireann youth organization at the age of fourteen. There is also a strong emphasis on Irish history and culture at the house, which means he has been infatuated with literature and patriotic ballads from a young age. Behan finally joined the IRA at the age of sixteen which led to his term in a juvenile prison in the UK and he was also incarcerated in Ireland. During this time he learned on his own and became a fluent Irish speaker.
